John has lived in Missoula for 16 years – six during the late 1980s through mid-1990s, and continuously in Ward 4 since 2005. John, his wife, Karen, and son, Eli, live in the Lewis and Clark neighborhood with their dog, Cody, and small flock of chickens.


John operates Soft Hit, LLC, a family business he started in 2011. Soft Hit sells training baseballs, softballs, and golf balls online and to sporting goods stores across the country. Soft HIT balls are found locally at Bob Ward’s and Play It Again Sports.


John is currently in his seventh year as a member of the Missoula Consolidated Planning Board, where he served as president from 2013 to 2015. He was a technical advisor to the Missoula County Open Lands Committee (2008-2012), and served as the president of the Lewis and Clark Neighborhood Council (2010-2012). John’s volunteer activities include the Community Food and Agriculture Coalition; Mt. Sentinel Little League; Missoula Ski Education Foundation; US Ski and Snowboard Association, Northern Division; Mountain West Youth Track Club; and City of Missoula Open Space Advisory Committee.


John holds a PhD in Landscape Ecology from the University of Arizona; an MS in Environmental Studies from the University of Montana; and a BS degree in Geography from Southeast Missouri State University. Additionally, he studied at Georgia Tech in the Master of City Planning program.
